This is an anthropology course grounded in a community-based learning methodology.  Our classroom extends beyond Daniel 101, moving us across Wofford’s front gate to Spartanburg’s Northside neighborhood.  We will learn about, from, and with the Northside through course readings, films, discussions, and service-learning at a) The Bridge and b) the Northwest Community Center.

Through this course, we will explore what community means, what challenges communities face, what and how communities set goals, and what our roles might be as students of and advocates for community organizing and development.  Through our explorations, we will learn about cities, social inequalities, and social justice within Spartanburg.  We will approach our community engagement with the Northside through preliminary training in anthropological field methods.
