In this course, we will be looking to the theatrical past, present, and future. We will examine performative acts, theatrical texts, and theoretical writings from the ancients to the present day. We will be analyzing the works of major historical artists and theorists whose contributions to the field continue to inform the ways in which we engage with the performing arts today. We will apply contemporary theoretical lenses to issues that scholar-artist-activists are actively seeking to address. And we will work throughout the semester to develop, refine, and articulate our own personal philosophies about what theatre does and what it means, what it can and should be, and what it is becoming.
