We will examine the diverse and dynamic cultures of the
German-speaking world from the wake of World War II, the national terrorist and
student revolution of the 1960s, Germany’s division into East and West during
the Cold War and the fall of the Berlin Wall, to today’s discussions about the
refugee crisis and environmental activism. Books will include the
autobiographical graphic novel Belonging by Nora Krug, With You There is Light by Alexandra Lehmann, and the road trip
adventure novel Why We Took the Car by Wolfgang Herrndorf. Austrian and
German films will have English subtitles and will underscore our discussions
about topics centered on German-speaking identities.
