This survey course covers the major political, cultural, and social developments in Europe since the Congress of Vienna marked the end to Napoleon’s reign.  This period is marked by rapid changes in intellectual, social, artistic, and political life, as well as by the rise of new ideas about citizenship and civic participation.  One way to look at this period is by examining the “isms” that developed during the 19th and 20th centuries, including romanticism, nationalism, liberalism, socialism, and communism.  We will also consider changes in scientific and social theories, from evolution to the push for women’s suffrage.  All of these changes fed into, and were themselves affected by, two world wars and the continued expansion of European imperialism.

This course is a hybrid course due to COVID-19.  All lectures are available on Moodle, as are the quizzes and paper assignments.  We will divide the class into 4 pods and each pod will meet once a week in DB 102 to review, answer questions, and talk about upcoming work.  These four pods will meet TTh at 9:30 and at 10:15.  These pods are not mandatory but students are urged to attend.
