This course surveys art made by African Americans in the United States and abroad. Artworks, artists, and movements will be studied within their diverse social contexts, from early slavery until the present day. We will examine the diasporic roots, main currents, forms, styles, content, and ideological dimensions of African American art, attending, in particular, to the potential of art as a mode of critique and resistance. Throughout the class, we will cultivate skills of close and critical looking, analytical writing, and hands-on research.
