The goal of this Interim is for students to examine “maps,” particularly their colonial histories and their powerful role in shaping narratives and understandings of spatial distribution of people, places, and resources.  Students will think about maps broadly and then investigate maps’ story-telling potential within the city of Spartanburg.  Students will learn about the history of Spartanburg from community residents and leaders while studying and designing corresponding maps of local neighborhoods.  Hands-on activities across Spartanburg will frame students’ experiences in this course, as small group projects will challenge students to re-think spaces and to explore the community-building potential of decolonizing mapping.
