This section of LIBA 101 will focus on ghosts - literal and metaphoric - and the characters who struggle to understand and release them. We’ll discuss Toni Morrison’s Pulitzer prize-winning novel Beloved, along with some shorter works, and take a look at our cultural fascination with haunted spaces and ghost stories. We’ll research local hauntings and consider the different approaches to telling these kinds of stories, using works like Alison Bechdel’s graphic memoir Fun Home and the video game What Remains of Edith Finch to complicate our understanding of both hauntings and storytelling as a form. The course will be discussion-based, student-centered, and will require participants to read and write for every class.
