‘Phil 203 - Problems of Philosophy’ is designed to help students develop an understanding of complex concepts and different points of view. This course is an introductory-level survey of three or four of the most important topics in the Western philosophical tradition, and some of the different views on each of those. It should be considered a ‘first look’ at philosophy and those topics, and no previous experience in philosophy is needed. We will explore classic and contemporary responses to three or four of the following questions:

  • What is philosophy and what do philosophers do?

  • Is there an enduring self?

  • What is the mind?

  • What is right action?

  • Can I know what the external world is really like?

  • Does God exist?

  • Am I free?
