Catalog Course Description:
A study of the genres of fiction, poetry, and/or drama designed to develop the student's ability to read literature with sensitivity and understanding and with a sense of literary tradition. Emphasis is on close reading of works from a variety of critical perspectives.
Learning Outcomes
Students will learn to
• think critically about texts written by others as well as those they create
• integrate differing perspectives into their critical thinking in discussion and writing
• read actively and analytically
• identify speaker, audience, and purpose in analysis of poetry
• explain the impact of specific diction upon poems and their own writing
• analyze the structure of poems in explaining their ideas
• express and respond to ideas orally
• argue persuasively and coherently orally and in writing
• reflect on their writing, using that reflection to critique their own writing and the writing of
others
Writing-specific goals for these sections are that students will learn to
• write papers that fulfill the assignment and address the expectations of the audience
• write papers with a clear thesis
• write papers that build a cohesive argument with convincing, properly cited supporting evidence
• write papers organized logically, with clear transitions
• write papers that create arguments, support them with evidence explained clearly and fully
• write papers with clear, concise, appropriate diction and a consistent voice
• write papers that follow the rules of standard edited English
