Studying Short Fiction: Seminar in Literature and Composition
Syllabus
Description and Goals:
This course is an introduction to the study of short fiction and writing about literature. Students will read stories by a wide variety of authors and will develop skills in oral communication, analysis and critical thinking through discussion. Students will develop writing skills by writing a number of short essays, and will employ research skills in writing one longer paper.

Requirements:
The success of a seminar depends upon its participants, so please come to class having read all materials. Please look ahead to titles for the week and make sure that you have read each story fully and carefully.
Essays must be on time: late papers lose a grade a day.
Attendance:
Class attendance is a requirement for this course.
One unexcused absence is permitted during the semester, but any other absence must be fully documented.
Grade for the course is lowered by one grade per unexcused absence beyond one. Five absences result in a grade of F
Evaluation and Assessment:
4 short papers (2-3 pages) 40%
In-class essays 20%
One research project (6-8 pages) 30%
Presentations, exams 10%
