Civic-minded people are concerned with and feel a sense of responsibility for the well-being of their community and all those in it. They understand community needs, democratic values, community assets, and the levers of community change. They build relationships in the community and work with others to achieve shared goals for improving the quality of people’s lives and promoting the common good.
Students in this class will build and demonstrate knowledge, attitudes and skills that are hallmarks of civic-mindedness. In addition to our scheduled class meetings on campus, students will spend time in the Spartanburg community through participation in three MLK/Unity Week events ("Walk As One," the Community Celebration, and the National MLK Day of Service), and the federal policy community, with a 3-night excursion to Washington, DC including legislative advocacy on Capitol Hill re: policy initiatives that address pressing societal concerns, improve the quality of people’s lives and promote the common good, and a networking dinner with Wofford stakeholders in Washington, hosted by Wofford’s Office of Student Success.
